Wood engraver, painter, draughtsman & Teacher. His first wife was the printmaker Gertrude Hermes.
A founding member of the International Society of wood engravers, co director of the Gregnog Press where some of the board felt his engravings were to erotic.
During the second world war Hughes undertook camouflage work before enlisting. During the war he was captured and injured, later repatriated and met Kenneth Clark who commissioned him to paint 3 pictures based on his experience as a POW. He taught later at Westminster School of Art & St. Martins School of Art. Examples of his fine engravings can be seen at the British Arts council Website.
